Biography
Irene Prentice is the owner and coffee roaster behind The Roastery Coffee & Kitchen, an independent specialty coffee shop and working coffee roastery located in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica.
At The Roastery, Costa Rican specialty coffee is roasted in-house, alongside a rotating selection of coffees from other small Costa Rican roasters and coffee partners, including Santa Lucía coffee from Helsar de Zarcero, NonBrand by Adrian Ramirez, Musa Lab, Dosis Coffee Roasters, and occasional guest roasters. Coffee is prepared by trained baristas and served directly to guests, creating a connection between the coffee producer, the roasting process, and the final cup. Irene’s focus is on sourcing quality Costa Rican coffees, developing roast profiles that respect the unique characteristics of each coffee, and making specialty coffee approachable and enjoyable for both local residents and international visitors.
Irene obtained her coffee roaster certification through SCA-CR. The Roastery has roasted coffee in-house since 2019 and combines specialty coffee with a relaxed café environment serving breakfast, lunch, and baked goods. Through the business, Irene also works to educate customers about coffee origin, varieties, processing methods, roasting, and the standards behind specialty coffee.
As a member of the International Women’s Coffee Alliance – Costa Rica (IWCA-CR), Irene is proud to participate in Costa Rica’s coffee community and to support greater visibility and opportunity for women throughout the coffee value chain.
