Biography

Xinia Chaves, an attorney and notary public who graduated with honors from the University of Costa Rica and comes from a family of coffee producers, has dedicated a significant part of her career to strengthening Costa Rica’s coffee sector and promoting gender equity in this field.

In her role as Head of the Legal Department at ICAFE (1982-1988), she played a key role in the amendment of Law 2762, which regulates the relationships between coffee producers, processors, and exporters.

Her leadership has been evident in multiple positions: as Vice Minister of Agriculture and Livestock (2010-2014), as President of the Costa Rican Coffee Institute (2012-2014) and COOPEPALMARES (1997-2010), and as Executive Director of major Costa Rican organizations such as the National Chamber of Coffee Exporters (2015-2018) and the Costa Rican Coffee Institute (2018-2022).

Throughout her career, she has stood out for her commitment to sustainable development. During her tenure at ICAFE, she implemented a Gender Policy that has fostered the inclusion and advancement of women in coffee farming.

Currently, she continues her work as an International Consultant and Expert in Coffee Legislation.
